The population count for the Town of South Kingstown as of April 1, 2000 was 27,921. This represented a 13.6% increase (3,290 persons) from the 1990 population of 24,631. In 1990, South Kingstown ranked number 13 in population among Rhode Island's 39 cities and towns.

South Kingstown contains 56.8 sq. miles of land area (147.895 square kilometers) and 22.678 sq. miles of water area (58.736 square kilometers). Total area land is 62.3 square miles (206.631 square kilometers). The 2000 population density of South Kingstown was 448 persons per square mile of land area. The 2000 population density of Rhode Island was 1,003 persons per square mile of land area.

Villages:
The Town of South Kingstown includes the following villages: Curtis Corner, Green Hill, Indian Lake Shore, Kingston, Matunuck, Middlebridge, Peace Dale, Perryville, Rocky Brook, Snug Harbor, Tuckertown, Usquepaugh, Wakefield, and West Kingston.

Housing Units: The total number of housing units in the Town of South Kingstown as of April 1, 2000 was 11,291.  This represented an increase of 1,485 units from the 1990 census count of 9,806 houses.  Of the 11,291 housing units, 2,023 were vacant. 1,726 of the vacant units were for seasonal or recreational use only.

Households: 
In 2000, there were 9,268 households in South Kingstown with an average size of 2.56 persons.  Of these, 6392 were family households with an average family size of 3.07 persons.
