In December 2005, the South Kingstown Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors initiated a series of four Facilitated Conversations focused on shaping the next economy and improving the business climate with the South Kingstown Town Council under the direction of Robert Leaver of New Commons
of Providence. The intent of these discussions was not to determine overall policy or make specific decisions, but rather to determine what advantages and barriers currently affect the local business climate and economy, and what steps may be necessary to improve both of these areas in the future.
All of the facilitated discussions were publicly advertised and direct invitations were extended to Town Staff, the South Kingstown Economic Development Committee, the Chamber Board of Directors and members, and members of the community at large. It is impressive to note that an estimated 50 different individuals participated in at least one or more of these facilitated discussions. At least half of this number attended all four of the sessions, which allowed for an important continuity and focus.
From the beginning, it was understood that the critical component to the success of this innovative process was the full involvement and support of the South Kingstown Town Council. The first three discussions were held with five Council members prior to a General Election in November 2006, and continued for the final session in February 2007 with two new Council members who were also new to the discussion process. The Chamber recognizes and applauds the commitment of the Town Council to participate
in efforts to improve our local economy by creating an effective partnership between the Town and the business community represented by the Chamber of Commerce.
