Introducing Feng Shui Into the Workplace
Dana T. Duellman, CPIA Frequently, when I am visiting with people about Feng Shui the conversation revolves primarily around their home environment. Very rarely, do I encounter people who think about applying Feng Shui into their work environment...but once we talk about the benefits, it would appear that having a balanced workspace is beneficial too! Feng Shui is the ancient
Chinese art of placement. The intention of Feng Shui is to create a balanced and supportive environment...whether it is at home or at work. While the western world of Feng Shui is different from the traditional Chinese practice, the roots and core practices are the same. In the workspace, there are some quick and easy fixes you can do to bring positive energy, esthetically improve the space, clean the air and brighten up the area without
revamping the entire office or breaking the bank. The fastest change you can do is to incorporate plants into the space. Plants bring live energy and do wonders for cleaning and removing toxins from the air. There are several different kinds of plants that do well in low-light areas...peace lilies and philodendron are two examples. It is good to put plants in vacant corners, either of a room or of a desk or cubicle as they will fill in the “dead space.” A
second tip is to keep the office and desk spaces clear of clutter. Work from files, not piles and put those files in a filing cabinet that is well organized. Clutter is distracting and unappealing to our own eyes...just imagine what it looks like for the clients you have coming in to bring you business! Keep the workspace clean and organized so that you can have more room to attract new business to you! That goes for your computer desk top too. Try to minimize the amount of furniture,
shelving, tables, etc in your space as well. Too much stuff can crowd a room or an office suite. Opt for investing in a furniture system that can keep you efficient and organized if need be. Lastly, incorporate art (posters, photography, paintings, dimensional art) into your space. Do not over crowd the walls...it is far better to have a few “focus” pieces that are inspiring and beautiful, than multiple posters of
this and that. If you have to have licenses, etc posted for people to see them, then frame them together or frame them separately and group them together so that it is attractive to look at instead of having multiple pieces of paper on the wall.
